    Legacy Unity Analytics

China’s National People’s Congress has passed the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), to protect the data privacy of Chinese citizens. It is effective starting November 1st, 2021 and requires players in China to provide Opt-In consent to their data being collected and Opt-In consent to their data being stored outside of China. Read more on China’s New Privacy Law here.

In order to comply with this legislation Unity must block data collection from players in China until they provide their consent to both opt-ins. This means that from November 1st, 2021 data from players in China will cease to be processed. Analytics reporting and player engagement systems reliant on data will not be available for players in China.

The Data Privacy Plug-in will contain the relevant functionality to communicate the player’s consent for both opt-ins. As a developer, you will need to add the Data Privacy Plug-in into your game along with reference to the Unity Privacy Policy in order to utilize the consent flow. Once the consent flow is in place data collection will be resumed for players in China who opt in.

    Legacy Unity Analytics FAQ
Why has my Analytics reporting changed?
From October 29th, 2021 data from players in China will not be included in your analytics reporting, it will be deleted before leaving China. You will need to update your game to use the new SDK and implement a PIPL consent workflow for players in China.

My game isn’t published in China?
Even if your game isn’t published in China you may have players from China playing your game because they have side-loaded it from an unofficial source. These players will cease to appear in your analytics reporting after October 29th, 2021.

What do I need to do?
    You will need to:
    1. To continue to obtain analytics data for the players in China after November 1st, you must use the Unity Analytics Data Privacy Plug-in to give your players control over Unity Analytics data collection. Your responsibility includes placing the Unity Privacy Policy button in a suitable place in your app to create an opportunity for the player to learn more about the Unity Privacy policy.
      1. The plugin referenced is the Data Privacy Plugin which is available as a part of the analytics package we provide "com.unity.analytics" (link here) or it is available standalone (only to existing users of it) as an asset store asset (supporting only unity 2017 and below) asset store link is here.
      2. Link to the documentation that refers to how to use the plug-in in your app UI is here.
    2. Upon click, this button will route the players to a newly released Unity’s Privacy policy webpage in compliance with China PIPL regulations and present an option (check boxes) to obtain following consents:
      1. Consent to collect the data for analytics
      2. Consent to transfer data outside of mainland China
    3. Since Unity’s Privacy Policy page is hosted as a web page, there is no need to update the Unity Analytics Plug-in, new Unity Privacy Page will be available starting November 1st to all apps using the privacy plug-in. Please refer to the step one above to follow the links to the plug-in details.

    4. Once the player visits the page and provides a consent to opt-in, Unity will resume the data collection for analytics.
Only if the player has provided consent to both opt-ins will their player data be recorded and appear in your Analytics reporting.

Where can I get the Unity Analytics Privacy Plug-in?

The plugin referenced is the Data Privacy Plugin which is available as a part of the analytics package we provide "com.unity.analytics" (link here) or it is available standalone (only to existing users of it) as an asset store asset (supporting only unity 2017 and below) asset store link is here.
