Available on the Unity Asset Store is the controller I use in my games and have worked hard on to make supper easy to set up while allowing as much customization as possible. Not only does it work with player controller characters but it works with AI as well meaning you can uses it for enemies, NPCs, or whatever you want to move around in your side scroller project.

I use it personally and update it as I implement new features. No code necessary, or dive into the code and add your own features.
