I've been thinking about creating an isometric game for quite some time now, but with studies taking up a lot of my time I haven't really been looking too much into it yet. But now that Unity (which I'm already accustomed to) has a 2d mode and I've gotten more free time on my hands I want to see if I can give my idea a go.

Anyway (just felt like giving some sort of introduction) my question is: what is the best way to make characters in an isometric game? individually making all the sprites required for smooth-looking movement sounds like a lot of unnecessary work. Should I first model the characters and then render them and their animations from many different positions and use those as sprites? (Which again sounds like a lot of work).
    Help is highly appreciated :D
