TBH it can work but after a while but it's like it stops handling new things on the clipboard - doesn't matter where you copy it from (as long as outside of editor). I'll put it down to another MonoDevelop issue and try Visual Studio at some point!

I run into that occasionally. A trick to make it work again is to Copy some random text inside MonoDevelop itself before switching to your outside source to Copy and Paste into MonoDevelop.

If you're on Windows, why on Earth would you ever use MonoDevelop? :)

Yes I can paste the text I want into Notepad just fine.
I find I have to constantly close MonoDev and restart it, quite frustrating when you're in the middle of working and it suddenly decides you can no longer paste outside text. (which is often in a clean source like Notepad, and is often another one of my own .cs scripts from a different project)
Something clearly is mucking MonoDev up. Anyone figured out what?

Got the same problem for a year now. The only fix I've found is to restart it. Then it will works for a short time... repeat has needed.

Visual Studio. It's big and slow and has problems, but for every problem is has, MonoDevelop has five. If you're not on a Mac and don't have computer specs that belong in the early aughts, you'd almost definitely have a happier time programming in VS than MonoDevelop. *shrugs*

I remember Unity came with a free trial of it. Is it worth the price?

The Community edition is free for most, as is the more lightweight "Visual Studio Code". The Community edition only costs money if you work for/with a large development team.

ReSharper from JetBrains is God's gift to Visual Studio, also. If you're a student, you can probably get a free license from somewhere.

If you think VS is slow and buggy then clearly you've never written Java in an Eclipse product before :)

There is literally NOTHING I hate more than VS honestly. It has thousands of problems, it's unnecessarily complicated and usually takes days before you can manage to make it work. I had problems with MonoDevelop too (it crashed after the third open file, no matter what the script was), now I am using Sublime Text 3 with two Unity packages (Highlighting and autocomplete), and I couldn't be happier.

Unity creates a solution file, and if you double-click a script file inside Unity, Visual Studio opens up and is all ready. I don't know how you use it, but I haven't had any major issues with it.

    Sublime Text is good, though.

There is a trick. Paste the text in the "Search" upper right text field. Copy text from there, now you can paste in the source code zone.

I don't believe Unity 5.5.0f3 came with a new version of MonoDevelop so that doesn't surprise me. Also, the Unity forums are not the best place to report bugs in MonoDevelop, rather report them through the official website

Same bug here, lol this was working even in '90s... but nice job that I cant copy paste in 2017.. lol shame on Unity and MonoDevelop. This stuff was cool till unity 4, from that point, lightmapping is not working properly, scripts are not wotkin, animations are not working, and now, the copy paste is not working.

Yes of course. I must have missed the part when all production for companies working in Unity ground to a halt because the "scripts are not wotkin". Looking back at my Mercurial repo - where in heaven's name did all these commits under Unity 4 come from? Script wotkin fairies for sure.....

    Unity doesn't make MonoDevelop......

Honestly, there's even less of a reason to use it now than a year ago (when this topic came up). VS is cross platform, JetBrains is working on Rider and offering free downloads, other folks have mentioned Sublime Text. I mean really...ditch the zero and get with the (any number of other viable) hero

Great work around! Works like a charm, wish there was a easier way to fix this but as it sits now this will work.

If only VS Code worked as well as monodevelop. Or maybe it's just me.

For example, because of this move by Unity, I decided to start using VS Code. But after I boot VS Code, I've started to get an error "Some projects have trouble loading. Please review the output for more details". And then in it's details it says something about 'The "GetReferenceNearestTargetFrameworkTask" task was not found.'.

I have no idea how to fix this or if it's something to worry about - I have no idea what causes it. In some small projects I have, I get no intellisense/autocomplete, not sure if it's because of this error.

Monodevelop was the only alternative which worked without any complications - at least for me.
