In Default layout its impossible to enlarge Scene panel to made it larger than initially, it is impossible to pull in down, up, left, right more than it was. I can only shrink it, so it became smaller than by default. In other layouts it's too not very mutable. Unity 5.3.1f1.

Hmm, I'm using Lubuntu 15.10 & there is no problem with resizing, so it's probably XFCE related bug.

    What resolution do You use?
    Can You provide screenshot?
Can You test it on another Xubuntu version ( preferably newer ) or another distribution?

That is max width/height of the scene panel that I can get.

Well this is my max width/height on a 1920x1200 screen:

On my second monitor 1600x900 it looks like this:

So I think for 1366x768 resolution this my be biggest scene panel You can get.

From what I measured it looks like:
    • left panel is always minimum 200px
    • right panel is always minimum 280px
So You probably cannot make them smaller.
I think that scene gets whatever screen space has left after setting panels in GUI.
