Can't always insert edge loop between two parallel edges

I am trying to insert edge loops between two parallel edges on a polyshape object. Sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't work. When it doesn't work I am seeing this in the console: https://gyazo.com/1d82c0ac125a557deb72f8cfff231dd1
