Not sure what I am doing wrong. I saved my Trimble Sketchup model as a .dae and imported as a new asset. I see it in the preview box, but cannot open it. I get the following message:

Unable to open Assets/filename.dae: Check external application preferences

I also got the same message when trying the sketchup/blender/unity fix.

Unable to open Assets/filename.fbx: Check external application preferences

The answer is probably obvious, but I am a new user and need a bit of help.

normally the formats you want to use are obj and fbx for any other format you would have to have the software for example if you want to import blender files you have to have blender installed still in my opinion that would be as a bad workflow in some cases if you are working for a team that uses different softwares. anyhow ultimately unity tries to import the models using the fbx importer. not sure about dae so your best bet is try another format instead.

Try creating a new, empty project and importing it. Especially since you're having issues importing the FBX version as well.

As for the DAE format, it's an open specification that is meant to be a superior cross-software format than OBJ. And so it's not tied to any single piece of software. I tend to use it over FBX for importing as a) I've never had an issue with it and b) It's a lot more version control friendly than binary formats.
