Cannot animate object

When I try to add an animation to my Player object the animation window is greyed out and says "Editing and playback of animations on optimized game object hierarchy is not supported. Please select a game object that does not have 'Optimize Game Objects' applied."

The models used by my Player (including weapons) all have "Optimize Game Objects" unchecked in the import settings under Rig.
