It's impossible to use font asset creator as it calls on dll's that won't run on Linux ( as far as I can tell ) is it possible to get a linux build of these for the Linux editor?

As of Unity 2018.3 and the latest TextMesh Pro packages (1.4.0.xx), the Editor only native plugins have been replaced by the new Runtime FontEngine which is now part of Unity and works on all platforms.

Indeed. .Net 3.x has been deprecated and the new TMP package uses .Net 4.x
