One thing that's annoying to see in games is when a character is walking, and then when you let go of the walk button, they instantaneously become still and idle without their arms and legs moving through the intervening space. It's very choppy and modern games have figured out how to efficiently avoid it.

Instead of making every possible transition animation for every possible release frame, I am wondering if there is a way Unity can be set to blend or crossfade the motion of imported animations from Maya and Blender, such as from any frame in the walk cycle to the beginning of the imported idle cycle. In effect this would make a smooth transition to the idle cycle like you see in professional games.

Sorry, but without providing even a basic explanation of how or what tool to use, there's no merit to your answer.

Dude. Unity literally blends animations and you even mentioned the key word, crossfade. Why don’t you open unity and test it out. There are lots of free assets and tutorials that outline the exact steps to achieve this.

This isn't the thread where you personal opinion about what someone should do is relevant. I'm not using unity, I'm preparing 3D models and animations with someone who happens to be using unity and instead of bothering them with every little question, I'm investigating what other usually people do.
    Thank you for that information.

My "personal opinion" answered your question. Perhaps you should learn to use google, or the Unity docs before asking for peoples advice.

Unity's blend transition is pretty good so don't worry about making every transition animation. However, I do make my transitions in blender if there are only a small amount of animations for the character or if the motion is very extreme and I want to control the final look of said motion transitions.
