So, I have a game I made using an old unity version.
But when I update unity, and uninstall the old version, the game does not open because it was made in an older version of unity.

Is there a way to change it to open on the new version?

If you're using the Unity Hub, you can switch the version it tries to open with. I don't have it open in front of me, but I think there is a version drop down when looking at your list of projects.

Make sure you have backed up your project before you open it in a different Unity version. When making a major jump, you almost always will encounter problems you'll need to fix (obsolete API's in use, subtle changes to a feature you are using have changed the behavior of your game, etc). There's generally no way to reverse a Unity upgrade, so important to backup first.

He's talking about source control, aka version control, which is the software industry standard way of both tracking changes and backing up your project. Git and SVN are the two most popular systems as far as I can tell, though Unity has their own Collaborate system, and there are a number of other systems available. Pick one, get your project set up on it, learn how to use it, etc.

It seems like a hassle, but eventually you'll do something which breaks your project either irreparably or taking days to fix, but would take 5 minutes to fix using version control.

But if you're not going to use one, at least make frequent manual backups.
