can I texture a pre-created environment using the terrain editor?

    Hi

    Is it possibly to create an environment mesh as an fbx (externally of the terrain editor) and then bring that into unity and the texture it using the terrain tools? (im guessing astually editing that mesh using the terrain tools would be a step too far - but that would be awesome also)

    No. Find splatmap/triplanar shader for mesh-terrain.

    It depends on what your needs are. First of all, you should pay attention to the free Mesh Terrain Editor Free in the first link.

    You can also find something on Github, peep a shader in some procedural terrain generation project or something like that, where meshes are used for landscapes:
