My macbook pro is mid 2014,
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Let me know if Rift is working on OSX in Unity now... much appreciated

Rift doesn't work with OSX at all, does it?

You can certainly develop VR apps on your MacBook Pro (I do all the time), but you'll need a Quest or a PC to test it.

Even if there would be proper support for VR in mac OS, you would need an dedicated GPU.
However you are still able to develop for VR on your MacBook, but testing the interactions etc. will be difficult. In fact i've done that with my MacBook air 2011 for several years now.

If you would like to develop with the quite new Unity XR Interaction Toolkit you could also use my VR Simulator from the asset store in order to test your APP without an headset.
