I'm with this. There is no such thing as an impregnable fortress. The whole point of security is to make it more expensive to access data the the data is worth. Not to make it impossible to access the data.

Every practical security measure requires a method for legitimate users to access the data. After all, what is the point of a lock that cannot be opened at all? Might as well just destroy the data.

As long as there is a way for legitimate users to access the data, it will be possible for illegitimate users to access the data in the same fashion. A illegitimate user simply has to find the way the legitimate user accesses the data. Sure there are some security measures that take an impractically long time to bypass this way, but its still technically doable.

And of course the legitimate users are often not as well protected as the data. As illustrated below.

I'm having trouble thinking of exceptions that aren't "destroy the data".

For everything else, as Ryiah says, it's more about feasibility than possibility.

I remember a chat app advertising that it's secure based on the idea of using one-time-pads as an encryption method, which are exchanged via QR code via the screens/cameras. The argument was that this is "uncrackable" as long as you exchange the pads in a secure location where nobody else can see the screens. To be fair, I think that's technically correct. You can't "crack" a one-time-pad.

However, you could still gain access to the devices and copy the pads. Or you could steal the devices and look at the message history. Or you could watch over shoulders while people use the app. Or you could clone someone's device. Or... well, a lot of other (admittedly difficult) ways to get in on the communication without "cracking" the pad.

I think that when people talk about things being "uncrackable" they're either being very technically specific with their language and hoping nobody notices, or they're thinking only about the front-door approaches and not the rest of a system - including and especially the people using it, who are generally the weakest link.

No need to worry. That user died of old-age centuries ago.
