Build size large despite assets being small

    Hi, I have a question about my build size. We are nearing the end of development, starting to look at build size, and I noticed that the builds seem larger than the should be. So I made a build and opened the Editor Log to look at the Build Report:

    Code (CSharp):

    14. Complete build size    1.7 gb

    So the total user assets consists of ~360 mb, and yet, the complete build size is 1.7 gb. I'm sure the binary information, bitdata, etc. takes up a decent amount of space, but surely not 1.4 gb?!?

    I need help with this. If you need more info or more output from the editor log, let me know.

    Unity version? Target platform? Build settings? Player settings? What packages are in use?

    For future reference, this is the General Discussion area, which specifically "is NOT a support forum", which may have something to do with why it wasn't answered already.

    Ah, my bad. Sorry about that :/ Unity version is 2019.2.12f1. Build target is iOS 13.2. There are a ton of player settings and packages, not sure how to provide that in any useful sense. I will try to include my entire Editor Log output:

    I haven't looked into this specifically, but the log in the OP does say "user generated assets only". My hunch is that packages aren't included in that, so I'd look to see if any of the packages you're including might have a bunch of built-in assets. That said, a whole gig seems excessive for that...

    Re: project settings, I'd first look at what texture compression is applied to your textures. Again, I haven't checked on how Unity comes up with the numbers reported in the OP, but it's possible that texture sizes could increase if you're supplying stuff in one format and Unity is converting it to an iOS-friendly format which isn't achieving the same compression, or if your texture import settings are telling it not to compress stuff.

    As an example, my current project has some textures where the difference between image formats can go from ~16kb to ~4mb.

    Edit:
    Looking through your log, there's a whole bunch of this:

    So a whole bunch of stuff that's compressed on your workstation is being decompressed in the build because you're trying to use an unsupported format.

    Thanks for taking the time to look through the log. I will look at my packages and see if that is an issue. We have actually specifically addressed texture compression, since our project uses a LOT of textures (no way around this unfortunately). It used to be PVRTC, and then we switched it to ETC2. (must have missed quite a few, need to go back and check). But you can also see in the log that it also says:

    Why would it be doing this? According to https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/class-TextureImporterOverride.html, RGBA Crunched ETC2 is compatible with iOS using OpenGL ES 3.0. I specifically looked into the compression formats to find one that would be compatible, and yet it is saying it is not supported. Any ideas?

    Potentially related: I am using Addressables to load the textures. Could that perhaps affect the supported compression formats?

    From a quick skim I'd say that's either a bug or incorrect documentation. I'd bug report it, then contact support to see if they can help you find a workaround or fix.

    Before doing that, have you made sure the build is specifically targeting OpenGL ES 3.0? This is one of the things that's useful to know from Player Settings. I haven't worked with iOS in a while, so I can't tell you exactly what to look for.

    Don't ios builds just produce an Xcode project and not an actual final build? I'd assume there would be a lot of extra stuff Unity has to throw into the Xcode project which would take up space. I've never actually developed for any iDevice so I don't really know anything, so probably not helpful.

    Ah thank you! I looked through and found that I was set to Linear color space with Metal Graphics API. I had forgotten I set this awhile ago because I was getting an error when using Gamma color space with OpenGL. So I need to figure out why I am getting that error, but I will start a new thread for that :)

    should only affect size in RAM, not game size right? Doesn't the decompression happen at runtime? So the build should still be compressed size, right?

    So I was doing some testing with ASTC, which should work on Metal, and I am getting this in the Editor Log:

    My post got deleted for pointless necro? But this was still a big issue for me and I posted new information on the issue..
    If anyone else has the issues, change shader setting to strip all as strip unused had some issues for some of the unity engine builds...

    I had the same problem in my android build and I did manage to fix it.
    UNITY 2022.1

    Open Player Settings > Select Android Tab > Other Settings > search for Texture MipMap Stripping and click it.

    It will Remove unused texture levels from package builds. reducing package size on disk.

    From 134.5 MB To 39 MB.
