[BUG] Unity 5.3.1f1 editor freezes with 3D scene on macbook air

    Hi all,

    I have strange editor bug when playing a scene with 3D elements .
    Editor works great, 2D and 3D scenes can be edited and elements manipulated. But during a "Play" (or displaying "Game" window) of 3D elements, Unity Editor freezes with the famous "beach balloon cursor". I have to force quit the editor.
    Only 2D elements scene work.
    (There are no crash logs (because of the manual "force quit"), no Swap memory...)

    Inside "Standart Assets Exemaple Project", I can only play "2dCharacter" scene successfully. All others 3D scene like "Car" or "CarAIWaypointBased" freeze Unity Editor.

    Others steps to reproduce:
    - new 3D project
    - add GameObject/Plane
    Editor is fine.
    - run simulation OR switch to the Game window
    Editor freezes indefinitely !

    Same result when adding a "SkyCar" Models from "Standard Assets/Vehicles/car/models" in an empty scene.
    But playing with a prefab "Car" from "Standard Assets/Vehicles/car/Prefabs" does not bother the editor, and works perfectly !!

    Unity 5.3.1f1
    MacBook Air with OSX 10.9.5
    i5 1.3Ghz, 4G ram, Intel HD Graphics 5000
    Not the best computer to play with, but I was able to run previous version of Unity on it, without any crashs !
    Is there a way to setup something ? opengl/graphic card for play mode ?

    Yeah same here.. it's getting really frustrating. Freezes in Editor after scene switch, freezes in editor while compiling, freezes in Playmode without exception.. and it's getting worse from update to update..

    Win10 Unity 5.3.1f1 no dump files or logs found yet :(

    You are running Windows 10 on a Macbook Air?

    No macbook, but i thought this might fit with editor freezes .. ;)

    Freezes are very often specific to certain setups. It can be the OS, the drivers, editor extensions, anti-virus, ... . The information given by totoetlititi was very precise and it is very unfortunate in my opinion that no one actually helped.
    If you want help with such an issue, you need to share a lot of information. Just writing you have the same problem, although with a completely different system will most likely not make it possible for anyone to help you.

    Same behaviour with the latest editor patch (5.3.1p3).
    (On an empty scene, adding a plane 3D object, switching to Game View, results to a spinning wheel...)

    The reason of a spinning wheel is very difficult to track. No crash log, nothing in the log system.
    I don't have "Instrument" to do a Time Profiler right now on this computer. If it can help, I can try to install it (but xcode needs to be installed, with tons of sdk and libraries, only for this little tool...).
    But spinning wheel can be a result of multithreading lock problem, and sometimes the culprit thread does not appear inside Time Profiler...

    got a way to reproduce it in 4/5 times

    - Startup Unity
    - Playmode .. click through several gamescenes
    - End Playmode
    - Wait 2-3 Seconds
    -Start Playmode -> Freeze

    The last entry in the \AppData\Local\Unity\Editor\Editor.log its always:

    ----
    Packing sprites:
    - Repacking is not required. Check took 8.075677 ms.
    Reloading assemblies for play mode.
    Begin MonoManager ReloadAssembly
    ----

    Somehow it crashes silently in that step..

    Same thing here , unity 5.3.1p3 editor freezes when in gamemode i have a game im making , it didn't happen before , just randomly started happening , glad to hear its not just me , but at the same time annoyed its another bug , Running windows 10 core 2 duo 6 gb ram , not sure why it just started , but it started around the time i made a test scene for my ai , its basically a cube stretched out with a texture with some walls around it , seems this has something to do with it maybe ?

    Same problem with 5.3.1p4.
    Nothing obvious in Editor.log or Editor-prev.log (I don't have any clue to look at).
    During the freeze, the screen can blink strangely...

    I just updated to 5.5 and had the same issue. A simple scene with 1 cube in it would freeze Unity.

    I ended up upgrading my MacOS and the problem seems to have gone away.

    I have been handling with this issue from some time now, from 5.3 to 5.4, from 5.4 to 5.5, from 5.5 to 5.6.
    Working on a macbook retina 2013 with OSX 10.9.5

    Everything works fine in the editor until hitting play.
    The problem seems to derive from the graphics.
    The editor responds well when the shadows are deactivated (preferences-quality-disable shadows)
