Question blocky light baking?

im not entirely sure what to even call my problem, which might be why i cant find an answer with search.

while in process of baking it gets about half way done and looks great, but by the time it finishes it looks awful. what do i need to do to make the finished product look more like the in process image?

i feel like ive messed with all the settings but none have helped, however i am very new to all the lighting stuff.
