Previously I got the hang of modelling a humanoid character in Blender (rigify), animating it, exporting the FBX and importing into Unity and setting it up with Mecanim. All good.

However I'm working on a 2D game now. Using the same approach I could position the humanoid skeleton perpendicular to the camera and all workflow would be about the same. Except I would like to replace the mesh with Sprite Renderer objects attached to each bone.

Is that doable? I mean, Mecanim animating the skeleton imported from Blender with Sprite Renderer objects attached to each bone?

Any hints or documentation would be appreciated. I'm hoping I won't need a different third party tool for this workflow. Thanks!
