Hello everybody! Long story-short I’m into concept design, so I decided to pick up SketchUP since it looked user friendly, plus I needed it for simple tasks. After a while I felt in love with modeling, so I’m looking for a program which would serve as a good tool for this. I’m thinking between Modo and Blender. I read a lot on forums and the fact that people are debating “Which one is better” Maya, Modo or Blender, really got me optimistic that Blender is up for the challenge and even more so since I’m going to use it mainly for design. So what do you guys think ?

I’m inspired by the work of Vitaly Bulgarov, GavriilKlimov , Mike Nash. I wonder if Blender has the tools and it is stable enough to handle complex model making similar to the work of the designers I mentioned above? So what would you advice me ? Thanks ! :)

I hope this answers part of your question. ;)

Check out the whole page and the nature pic renders lower down.
All of this was done in Blender.

Blender, Softimage XSI, Maya, 3dsMax, Carrera, Modo, Sculptris, Hexagon etc.
are all great 3D modelling softwares.

Everyone has their own personal 3d software preference.
So each will say, that this software is better than the other etc. etc. etc. etc. infinite number of times.

When it comes to 3D modelling, they are all capable.
It also, all comes down to the user.
And his 3d modelling skills!! :)
Whether it may be for games, architecture or concept art.

Sorry for replying on you thread...i'm also about to use Blender on 3d modeling. But the installer that I installed on my machine has a little bit of problem(not opening). I am using 32bit Windows 7 Professional and I downloaded the latest version of Blender 2.73a.

Hope to have feedback from you guys on your experience on installing Blender ;)

Maybe you got the wrong version (64Bit)? If not, try an older installer (2.73). Have you tried "Run as Admin"?

There isn't a supreme ruler among artistic software, some got features others is missing, some are specialized to make a specific task much easier, many do the same thing but in a different way... so it comes down to personal preference. Do you start your morning with a cup of coffee or tea? Is one better then the other ;) Most professional, modern artists doesn't even stick to a single program... they make concept images in their favorite 2D program, then sculpt the model in one program, retopologize it in another, bake normals in a third software, create textures in yet another program and so on... sometimes... some of these programs are switched out when they need the final model to come out in a specific format for the game engine, move studio software etc...

So for concept art, many artists start with making traditional 2D sketches until they get the shapes, colors and details they are looking for... they do this because 2D is simply fastest way to test ideas and prove that it is worth spending a few days/months on making the final model. The art is often minimalistic and concentrates on conveying the important shapes, colors and details... many artists got specialized (photoshop) brushes with interesting shapes for this.
A rare breed of artists do their concept work in a 3D program with sculpting tools, they are rare because the risk is higher that it takes more time but they are so good at what they do that companies trust them, whatever comes out at the end will be a AAA model.

As a hobbyist, you can do whichever way you want. I'd recommend that you visit Youtube and search for things like "concept art", "3d sculpt", "tutorial" and so on... there are a ton of material over there and! You might even find videos from one or more of your favorite artists that show their own process... yeah... there is more then one way to make art and it can get complicated if you want it into a game engine or something else with a specific look ;) It is also highly recommended that you study traditional art... there is a system behind colors, shapes, lighting, perspective, brushes and much more. Depending on how they are used, they can intentionally convey specific feelings too a person that view the final image / 3d model / composition / scene...

I cannot sadly explain it all, it would literally end up as 5-10 books with hundreds of pages each... there is simply to much to discuss but I hope this at least gives you a pointer in the right direction... like I said... YouTube! It is your best friend to get started and learn the different processes.

Deon Cadme, thank you! It means a lot that you take the time to give such a good answer!
So far most of the listed things I have already done or I'm familiar with.
I guess you are right that every 3D package has its pros and cons.
When I said that I plan using a 3D package for concept design, i meant that
I'm going to use it for quality design presentation, not as 3D block to paint on or
a clean model ready to be used. :)
