Nice animation! Is the run with sword a different animation than the run, or are you using additive?

I've tried with additive animations first but it resulted in too many unpredictable movements so I decided to use different animations

Dude, this is great! The combat seems a LOT like KOTOR (If you've ever played it. If not, I highly recommend it.) Very cool. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun once it's finished. Can't wait for the next update!

I don't know how your doing it but i've been using AddMixingTransform() + Blend() for my upper body animations and they work great for arms, hands etc with no unpredictable results.

    Week 46 of 52

So, what's new this week? ...well, I got a bad cold and I'm only half functional at the moment, so there's no video this time :(

But...here's a quick preview of the Inventory panel for Blackreef Pirates!

We still have some time to spend on it, what would you like to see improved or changed? (yes, many icons are still placeholder and buttons need to be moved...)

    Diary of Capt'n Cominu - Week 48 of 52
Week 48...that means we only have 4 weeks left to create this little game. I'm really starting to feel the pressure now, and I've been in "crunch mode" for almost one year now: I'm tired as hell and going crazy.

Am I going to survive this? Oh, here's my bottle of rum!

    ------------------

Hey everybody, we're back with some new video goodness! This time you can see some great progress on the action bar and the combat system.

    Action bar and "warmup" time

Another big chunk of code was completed this week: the warmup time indicator in the action bar!
Wait...what? You will probably know the meaning of a action "cooldown" time often used in RPG...well, we're heading to a opposite approach: the warmup time. In short, you can use any action you want (if the character have enough stamina) but you need to wait a little before is really executed.

Oh, don't worry, this wait is very short, from 1 (generic attack) to 3 seconds (for bigger and powerful attacks).

    New combat animations

From a graphic point of view now each action can have multiple animations: this means a single attack action will never use the same animation all over again.

Here's a short video with all the cool things...I'm going back to my rum

Hi Cominu, would you like me to move this thread over to the new 'Works in Progress' subforum. You will probably get more feedback then in the showcase.

Stramit, with all your great work done with SSE you can do whatever you want with this thread! :D

..seriously...yes, you can move it! I also think is a good idea to change the title to something like "Blackreef Pirate" since we now have a name for this game (only if it doesn't break the permalink)

Very nice work. I'm not sure you are going to be able to finish in 4 weeks, but I don't think it's that important.

You have achieved so much, that levels and the whole story - the game - should also be on par. Do what you can of course, but this is commercial grade stuff,
I'd fund it on IndieGoGo if you need the funds.

I love the UI style. I like how the whole thing screams "cleanly done".

Thank you all guys! I really need your support in these final weeks :)

Yeah, 4 week only...we're working hard as ever to produce something playable even if with less features. The first cut is the story, there will be no story at the moment and we're reducing everything to the bare minimum in order to finish it.

Of course we are going to continue the development after the week 52, but to me is very important to keep the promise: 1 year -> 1 game

Yes, is going to be a little game and not the next skyrim...yet ;)

I must have missed this thread when it was in the Showcase - what a great read it's been!

Everything looks great so far, the combat against the dummies the dummies looked and felt good, and I love the art/lighting style of the levels. Very similar to what they do in TF2.

Keep it the great work :)

Greatest develop thread on these boards!
Keep up the great work. Do you have some sort of deadline for yourself / how many more weeks do you think you'll be spending on this project?

If I may ask, how does your artist produce the textures? Does he hand paint them, run real world images through photoshop processes, a combination? Would it be possible to see the UV's and wire of some models?

I'm really looking forward to playing this.

The deadline is at week 52 - mid february. I don't think the game will be ready to publish by february but we're aiming to produce at least a good playable demo.

How many more weeks? good question :)

Are you interested in the environment or character textures? I'm going ask the artist for some nice wireframe today.

Here's the latest update from our hidden pirate cove in video form, enjoy!

    Changes from last week

    • New swords: real steel, no more wood!
    • Parry (miss) and evade animations: more dynamic melee combat
    • Initial support for hit, miss, evade based on character stats
    • Particle systems: used for sword "sparkles" together with the parry animation
    • New target selection style (red circle on floor): less cluttered screen

    Week 52 - A year in review

Oh sh*t! 52 weeks of development have passed. I don't see any released game, do you?

Before starting a new year here's a review of what went right, of what went wrong and our future plan on Blackreef Pirates.

This is the full story (it's something like a post-mortem, except it's about a game still in development):
    Week 52 - A year in review

and...we tried to make a video showing ALL the progress from day 1:

In all honesty, I didn't expect it to be completed, lol. But, that isn't cynicism or antagonism.. Fact is, the quality of work and presentation has been some of the best seen in the unity community. Frankly, I get really tired of "games" being made, yet see absolutely zero organization, direction or documentation. Hell, I had a buddy working for a company that will go unnamed "cough" ZOMBIE "cough" which didn't even have a design doc for an FPS they were deving....

"Hey Jim, I think we could use some rocks in this environment, maybe some tree's"
"Sure thing Bill, you want deciduous or coniferous?"
    "Doesn't matter."

    -palms face-

It's hard to expect something as deep as you're developing, this clean and organized, from only two people, in one year. Quality takes time, and this title is most definitely quality. The fact that you even had a schedule, and fought to keep it, shows fantastic discipline. It's legit.

It has been an absolute pleasure seeing this title develop. As always, I look forward to seeing MOAR!! :) Enjoy your well deserved break. In the mean time, I'm going to drool over your art assets. :p

    We're back!

After some weeks off to relax (aka working on some side projects) we're back full-time to the development of Blackreef Pirates!

    Changes from last update
    • Moving to unity 3.5
    • Dropping our custom pathfind solution in favor of unity3d built-in navigation mesh system
    • Lots of internal editor tools to speed up the development

We've also done some lighting test for indoor areas, with candles, torches, etc...what do you think?

    This is looking amazing :)

I'm so happy to just see how clean everything looks, both in terms of style as well as execution. The game just looks solid!

I would love to hear about your experiences with unity. Which areas do you feel are working well for you and which are holding you back.
