I've got a character more or less modeled and would like to rig it now.

Thing is, I have no idea how to do it so it is
    a) compatible with unity and
    b) something that can be used when following all the "import your rigged character into Unity" tutorials
    c) it is compatible with as many movement asset packs as possible (Although i don't know if that is even a concern, as far as I know any animation might work with any halfway sensibly rigged model anyway.)

So, is there some stellar character I can open up in Maya/ Blender to dissect and learn from before rigging my own?
Assets I can copy parts from without violating any agreements preferred, but not required :)

UnityChan seems to be an obvious choice, 's she a good fit to start from?

Any general humanoid rig will do, add your FBX file to assets, select FBX file, in "Inspector" select "Rig", in "Animation Type" select humanoid, then click "Apply" unity will try to map your bones to an "Avatar" (unified humanoid rig), and will map the animation as well to match the avatar, if you want to check or edit the mapping click "Configure"
    For more info: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/ConfiguringtheAvatar.html

Here is the list of avatar bones, mapped to my model bones.
PS: The bones with dotted circles are optional.
