Best asset to handle tilemaps with 3D hex tiles ?

    The Unity tilemap system is nice for sprite-based tilemaps, but not for 3D tilemaps with models/prefabs as tiles.

    I'm looking for an asset that:
    • makes painting of a tilemap with prefabs instead of sprites possible
    • allows me to set a Z coordinate for those hills, etc.
    • allows multiple layers or something similar, because my tileset is a base tile and then additional stuff like trees, roads, etc. to be put on top
    • ideally has an import/export function so I can script the whole thing (i.e. I have the data for the map already, would be nice if I can just load it into a generator).
    I don't need runtime or procedural generation, though if it can add some noise (say, select a tile from an array for variety) that'd be nice.

    Yes, I looked into the asset store. There are plenty of tools, but not all have good descriptions and I'm asking for recommendations. And again: I'm not looking for tiles (i.e. graphics assets), but a tile map editor.
