finally, the beech tree package has been released on the asset store.

it ships with a set of 9 fully editable beech tree prototypes of different sizes and shapes – each between 1300 – 2300 triangles and textures for bark [diffuse, normal] and leaves [diffuse, normal, translucency].

    just check it out: http://u3d.as/content/forst/beech-trees-package/1EH

    thanks norby,
i just use two different textures but bump mapping on the terrain.

i just started to convert some of the tree creator modeled beech trees to "traditional" imported tree models and made some quick tests on visual impact vs. rendering costs.

my test scene contains about 80 visible mesh trees.
    shadow distance is 60 meters.

especially if you are targeting low end hardware imported trees are definitely the way to go. additionally they better fit with unity’s original trees coming with the terrain asset.

so anybody interested in a package of "traditionally" beech trees?

$tree_comparison_02.jpg tri optimized version of beech tree

$tree_comparison_03.jpg imported model using custom bark shader with realtime shadows and bumpmapping

$tree_comparison_04.jpg imported model using standard tree soft occlusion shaders

thanks, but it’s not only pro and real time shadows. also some work on the textures, lighting, shaders and things like that ;-)

    $birchessprucesbeeches.jpg

here comes a pretty rough preview on upcomming asset: birches and spruces as well as simplified imported mesh trees using an advanced bark shader which provides bumpmapping and real time lighting – and are pretty fast to render.

    comments are welcome!

These trees are using terrain system? Your advanced bark shader is for terrain engine too? Are you using sixtimenothing's shader for bumping terrain? Thanks

@Demostenes: yes, yes, yes: all trees use the terrain engine therefore wind/bending and billboarding are supported. the advanced bark shader also works within the terrain engine. and it is sixtimenothing's shader for bumping terrain.
