couldn't figure it out - it should be as simple as click a tileset from a palette and draw on the tile canvas

That's how it should be working now. You also have to click the brush tool once, but eraser and picker are accessible via short cuts afterwards (alt and shift).

The inability to swap into brush mode quickly is frustrating.

Yeah, feels like it takes quite a lot of clicking to get into painting..

Maybe clicking brush tool could automatically activate the latest tilemap ready for painting,
instead of having to go expand tilemap grid in hierarchy, select tilemap, clicking brush again..
(since brush tool is shown as enabled, event hough it doesnt do anything if tilemap is not selected first..)

You only have to select the TileMap in the Hierarchy View if it is empty. If you click in the Scene View, and there is a pixel there it will select the TileMap, and if you keep clicking it will select what's under. Works just like selecting sprites.

If a TileMap is not selected the Paint Tool is shown selected only if mouse is over the Tile Palette. It should become un-selected when mouse leaves the TilePalette.
