    Hello everybody,

I was just wondering what people think about a category on this forum for art and code related challenges/contests with or without prizes. Please let me know what you guys think.

A contest is always a great chance to sharpen and share art/code skills with likeminded people. In essence, it's a win-win situation if you participate.

If you have topic ideas I'd also like to hear about them.

    Thomas P.

Great idea! There are some amazingly talented people in the community who could really shine with something like this.

I think that'd be quite good, developers could come up with some pretty interesting things with that...

Seems to be a good idea, these contests could give prizes or not, or also badges or achieviments here in the forum.

Just do it already ! You'll never know what great things can come out of this community with the official unity seal if approval on it.
I seriously hope you have it all planned out for a first contest, already :p

And don't do it like soo many other forums did and failed miserably - talk it do death, because people couldn't agree on a contest topic. I wouldn't want to read 10 pages of blabbering, pros and cons of prizes/no prizes, this/and/that/theme.

Please get that decision out of our hand and go for it - will you *puppyeyelook*

I hear your concerns. I have seen this in the past myself. The decision making is up to UT but there is nothing wrong with asking what people would like to see as contest theme. Anyways, I am talking to the higher gods at UT and hope they find the idea appealing. So please spread the word and reply to this thread if you like to see this happen. The more interest is shown here the more likely something will happen.

That's a wonderful idea, it would inevitably ramp up the overall quality, as actually the only "quality locomotives" are the released games. High quality Works in Progress are good, but they're often burried in no time by the global WIP flow.
Putting different officially Unity supported competitions (with or without prizes) would give some clear objectives, more solid than the usual hobbyism, and focus the actually disseminated talents on one common goal.

Sounds great, but remember to include some 2d art competitions, I see a lot of competitions being aimed towards 3d character models.

I think it sounds like a good idea. My only concern would be those people who don't want to do any work themselves and just hold contests to get a bunch of free models and scripts. If there will be a contest forum, it would have this problem plus the contest holder not giving the prize and a few other concerns. I say have a way to submit a contest that can be screened by mods and approved or not (or something along those lines). This would reduce the number of spammy and phony posts.

    +1

    badges would be enough..
consider also small prices (atleast sometimes) like asset store credits (just few, <20cr), unity bookstore gift cards etc. or other unity related paid material / plugins / courses / magazines..

maybe now then someone would sponsor a contest (good promotion for them..?)

I think that the works in progress forum would be suited to this, with each person competing able to have a thread tracking their progress (we are seeing this with the void pirate competition). Have a sticky at the top for (only) completed work.

    :)

I forgot about music. That would be cool also. Don't just have art and code contests. Music plays an equal part in game dev.

+1,some hard modelling would be good because to make a good looking caharacter you are most likely going to have to buy zbrush or mudbox.

I would definitely like to see this. It would be a great, centralized way for people to find contests related to Unity and discuss them.

I usually only enter contests when I have free time and notice that one is happening is passing, so this would definitely make it easier for me 'notice' more of them.

It would be cool if then unity added a star system to the forums underneith out avitars, and you get a star if you win a competition :) this would be good because people could tell on the comercial work forum if there getting a good worker or not :D that would encorage loads of people to enter the competitions because people serching for team mates and/or freelancers would be more inclined to get someone with more stars.

Sounds pretty interesting actually, but in this case all of the contests would have to be moderated / run / awarded by official Unity mods, which can't be done for a number of reasons.

This sounds like a lot of fun. If it came to fruition then I'd have a stab at it. 3D art, 2D art, coding, level design, overall game design, music, foley, animation... the list is endless! Just keep it nice and organised and I'm sure the Unity community will do you proud.
