I've done a few of those job-quizzes on-line that assess your personality and say what job you should do.

    e.g.

    Q. Are you artistic? YES
    Q. Do you like science? YES
    Q. Are you social? NO

Result: You should be a games programmer.

The last one I took was on the Oprah sight (it came up in Google, don't blame me). It said I should be Actress (ahem! Sexist Oprah.), entrepreneur, salesperson, politician.

Bit vague but I suppose indie game dev falls into the entrepreneur category more-or-less.

Funny how accurate these things are at predicting what you end up doing. I'm trying to reverse engineer the tests so I end up being an international spy or something. Then if I just alter my personality accordingly...

Have you ever done one of these? What did it predict?

Edit: Yes! Just did this one and it said I should be an astronaut. Awesome. \:)/

I've never taken one of these quizzes, but I think the question in the title is interesting on an existential level.

I'm sure I'm not destined to be a game developer.

I guess I see games as more of a means to an end. Games present such an interesting problem for narrative. I want to solve that problem and to use a game's involving nature to create new forms of storytelling. I love the feeling of being in a young medium where the possibilities are legion and not everyone has the same dream you have.

I used to think I'd be happy working at a dev studio, but I've come to realize in the last year that I'd sooner give up on games altogether than consign myself to a world where their elevation is not anyone's priority.

And yes, the two previous paragraphs contradict each other. Like Whitman, I guess I contain multitudes.

So if I answer YES to all three then I cant be a game developer? aww shucks.

I dont need a studio anyways, I want to do it all myself as an interest. Maybe sell something, sure. But there comes a time when you get sick of plopping down money for a game that doesnt do as you imagined, or think the whole time how it could be better. So toss that survey in the trash.

    Well I beg to differ.

    Q. Are you artistic? NOPE
    Q. Do you like science? YEP
    Q. Are you social? YEP (Once I start talking I can't stop) :D

Guess I should give up my dreams of being a successful game developer :p

The types of skills required for game development is so broad that I don't think anyone is excluded. Not even people with social skills.

If you answer those quizzes with "I am social" "I like helping people" etc. It would probably come out with "You should be a social worker." Actually I think just by saying that you are artistic AND scientific is enough for it to give you the answer "multimedia developer". I don't know why it doesn't also suggest "Custom motorbike builder" or something. That would also fit into those categories.

Let me fix that for you.

Q: Do you like making games? YES
Q: Do you understand the difference between making games and playing them? YES
Q: Do you either have the skills to make games or the will to learn them? YES
Q: Are you a persistent, dedicated hard worker? YES

Result: You can try your luck making games!

People should play more decent games, it helps cross reference and benchmark their own creations.

I will never earn my crust from game development but like the attitude and improving my skills... now modding the 3d complete physics kit asset for my 3rd & 4th game (2D & then my first 3D ever). Hoping to release before Crhistmas.

Of course, what makes a game a decent game?

    Pretty open to interpretation.

Well creatively yeah, but if it looks like crap / buggy as hell and had about as much effort put into it as cold bangers and mash at a 5 star restaurant. I don't really think it's down to interpretation..

Really? I think that's confirmation bias talking. It shotgunned four different things at you, only one of which is kinda maybe sorta a bit like what you do at a stretch.

To address the OP a little, I have taken similar tests before, but none of them have been to tell you your optimal job(s). In fact, they've all been about self-reflection, understanding your own personality, and understanding how you fit in with teams and the type of work that might suit you. The point isn't to tell you what will make you happy, it's to help you understand yourself more so that you can figure out for yourself how to be happy and play to your strengths.

I don't really see much value in being told what jobs I would like because that in itself isn't actually useful information. I could probably really enjoy being a garbage collector if I was working with the right people in the right environment, and I could probably passionately hate game development if I was doing it with the wrong people or environment. The actual thing that you do at a job is only a small part of it, and it's quite possibly not the part that makes it or breaks it in terms of your personal advancement and/or happiness.

The MBTI is the most common of the type of test I took. It's not perfect, but it does spur on some helpful reflection, get you to ask useful questions, and generally provide a handy tool for figuring out how to get the most out of and for yourself from a working environment.
