Are there any plans for AV1 video playback support in the Unity editor? And if so is there a proposed timeline for implementation?

It is under consideration, and we don't have any proposed timeline yet. You can find our roadmap here and see all things we are planning and currently working on.

Great. I found the codec item and upvoted it. I develop 360 video projects and Unity would be ideal if it weren't for the fact that it is tied down to older codecs.

I just remembered. It is still not official yet, but the next thing we want to work on is allowing users to provide their video codec. I still don't know what codecs we will support on day one, but we will make the foundation so that anyone can. So worst case, you could do it yourself. It is still not official, and I don't want to promise anything, but it is closer than I initially thought.

VP9 and AV1 seem to be a requirement for Steam Deck video support.

We distribute with Unity libwebm which includes its own VP8 codec. So you can already support the steam deck by using a webm with VP8 codec.

We are still exploring solutions. Our current solution doesn't scale well so we are trying to fix this before adding more things to it. We don't have any ETA, but it is high in our priority.
