    This still happens win unity 2021.3.1f1 when having the rider debugger attached.

    Happens to me too in 2020.3.3 after hitting play after running the editor for a certain time....

    Still happening in 2020.3.33f1 here. Modifying + saving a script seems to break me out.

    Happening to me randomly. Often after the first time opening Unity without changing a thing. I find that if I have Visual Studio open, closing it will get me through, but if its not open im hosed.

    Working on 2020.3.33f1 with Visual Studio 2019 still happens at random times. Only option seems to be to kill Unity process and pray you saved recently.. And unlike other reports I've got Plastic SCM and Collaborate disabled.

    This error is still so frustrating that I hope to join Unity Company, fix it, and quit.

    It is just happened when I attach VS2019 to Unity 2020.3.33f1c2. It happens today. Everything was ok last week.
    It is maybe related to your async scripts. I change my code to sync function run will be fine. But If I run my code with async function, it is just one time to enter play mode not stuck, the second time will be stuck.
    I could not find where my code causes it, but I think some async functions casing it, not all async.
    Maybe I stopped play mode, but some async functions are not stopped. They were still running in the thread.

    Unity 2019.x, 2020.x, 2021.x, 2022.x all were slow on my home Windows PC but worked great on my office Windows PC.

    By slow I mean that empty freshly created project with one script in it took 15 second for Unity to process the change to a script ("Hold on" "Reload Scripting Assemblies") and 10 more seconds after pressing Play button to actually enter Play mode.

    HERE IS HOW I FIXED THIS ISSUE:

    My office Windows PC System Language was to English US and my home PC was set to Ukrainian.
    By setting your Windows System language to English US the issue is gone.

    Unity team, can you confirm reproducing this bug with any other non-English language setting?

    In case anyone else is still running into this. I found that making a slight modification to any file while its stuck during the application.reload box will let you through. For example, I move a vert on a model in blender, save, and then it lets me into play mode.

    I was having an issue with 15 seconds minimum for the "Completing Domain" step after script compilation, as well as a 5-10s wait for Editor Windows to Repaint, and this absolutely fixed it!

    I switched my Display Language in Windows 11 from "English (United Kingdom)" to "English (United States)" and the problem went away!

    I can't even open my project anymore. On the splashscreen it is stuck at:

    It remains stuck indefinitely.

    Happening here too, after I updated from 2018->2020. Happens when I make changes to a canvas, maybe other things as well. Takes about 5 mins to enter play. Doesn't just happen with play. Doesn't seem to happen when there is no canvas.
