    Hello Unity forums,

I'm 17 and I want to create games. The small problem is, I'm still in education so I don't work for some big-fancy game development company, nor have the ability to run my own indie dev company just yet (That is my life goal) but I still want to create games, and I can't do everything myself because I simple don't have the time, but I can't afford to buy assets, even the cheap ones, how do you pay for your assets?

Sorry for most generic answer ever, but tried mowing the lawns or babysitting?

Do something that gets money, then you can spend money.

you could get a job as darkhog said, but if (That is my life goal) then dont do anything else other than use/learn unity/C# in every spare moment. Basicly if your not doing eduction work, then do unity, forget going out :(, study study and study Unity and c#

“God help us -- for art is long, and life so short.”

We all have limited time (and money), do your best to do what you can with what you have. We haven't always been so lucky to have the asset store.

My son is not 17 but a starving college student. :) He saves his money, uses Christmas money from grandparents and asks for assets as birthday gifts. He also does chores around the house, mowing the lawn, cooking for us, and routine cleaning around the house. Plus he works on our game. We give him money for doing these things and I imagine over 50% goes for Unity assets. :) You might try asking your parents what you can do for them. Whatever you do, follow through. Parents will be more supportive if you keep your end of the bargain and it will show them you are serious about making games.

I would, but I still owe my parents £110 for old music gear, but once I've paid them off I'll see what I can do.

Sounds good! Make some music and sell it on the asset store! That might help as long as the music is useful for games.

You sound like my kids. Too many interests and projects at once. :) At 17, that is not a bad thing just means stretching your meager budget. Good luck to you!

Then make music/audio and sell it on Fiverr/Asset Store using your music gear. ;)

Its also worth noting that you don't need to buy assets to create a game. Sure, it can be slower, and expect your game to be simpler. But there is no asset you absolutely require to make a game.

With Unity 5 being almost completely free you get a lot out of the box already. In fact, it's quite crazy how much you can do without spending any money.

So what do you need assets for? Graphics? Just make your own. Blender is free, heck, even your time is free. Follow a minimalistic style and throw in some of those image-effects (oh god, they are free now!).

Need another UI-plugin? No wait, this is also included in the box.
    Physically based shading? Nope.
Advanced sound manager? Hmm, not really.

Bro, I'm 17 too - and I've never made anything valuable. Not because of assets, but because I keep worrying about what I don't have - and what could be better. So don't do what I do (or have done). Go finish some games.

Use free assets, plenty of them out there.
    Use turbosquid.com
Use just shapes to make your game, your game is just code, once youve done enough, then seek assets, if you make something great, go kickstarter or find somebody to help get you assets. Otherwise, just a waste of time and money.

I make most of my assets.

You can make 3D assets in Blender (free) 2D assets with GIMP (free) and Inkscape (free).

You can record your own music using your music gear.

    Or even Windows Paint!

You can create a game in Unity without spending a dime.

Hello, i am 15 and I am in a similar situation as you. I have before and after school activities, and i do not have a job, so no time and no money. But if making games is really your life goal, (as it is mine) you should be able to find time to work and study unity3d. It is 6:00AM before school for me right now, (I have been working since 5:00AM) and this is the only time I have to work today, so I choose to wake up early rather than sleep in.

So dont make yourself exuses and start studying unity as soon as you can. I have 2 games on the app store, although they aren't anything amazing, but it is a start that you have to make.
