Hi, so I'm creating a crew simulation inside a huge space ship. You can switch between decks and the current deck is completely visible to the player.

There are around 100 quarters on some decks and also large storage rooms, that have to be lit.

Directional light is not an option since it's in space and non lighted areas have to be pitch black, so I ask myself how pros are going about this.

I'm using Unity for over 7 years but never really learned about lighting. Is there a certain technique for this scenario?

The next step I would go is only show lights in camera view, but I wanted to ask if there are any other tricks.

Is the ship like an advanced Star Trek ship, using futuristic pulse energy engine technology?

Or is it a larger version, of a NASA type space shuttle, using fossil fuel etc?

No engines, no fuel. It's just a vague recreation of the Voyager interior, which obviously will need a lot of lights. :)
