Any tips for a story driven pixelated game?

    Hey guys it's been a while. I hope you guys are doing okay :)
    So I have this nice fictional story my best friend is writing for his book and I thought to myself "How awesome it would look in a pixelated game?". I think it'll be my next project. He even agreed to help me with it. So, do any of you guys have tips for me? What keeps the player focused in 2D story driven games? How can I impress my players? What would they expect the most from a game like that? Seat edge twists in the story, more rpg elements, more dialogue options? or whatever you can think of.

    Adventure/RPG/Platformer/Interactive Novel? I think it depends on what type of game you are doing.

    The genre will most likely be adventure or action. I might add some rpg elements as well.

    Well for starters, your core gameplay mechanics have to be fun of course, and the story should have enough points of motivation / reward to keep the player engaged. Your narrative should be a device to motivate and empower players, while gameplay mechanics can be used to reenforce it, e.g. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. However, no matter the story of your game, it is a game after all, and the game mechanics have to come first or it will fall flat.

    Why don't you get the ball rolling by show some examples of your ideas? I like to contribute to a creative process but so far I see nothing to contribute to, just an open-ended question. Almost like your internal dialogue thrown up on a forum post.

    look at story driven rpg's. What do they have that works? Do something similar but in 2d. If it's a link to your friends novel (so you can both cross promote each other) you may be limited in what you can do though.
