Exactly why I've concentrated on the asset store and just used Unity for now as a hobby to play around with. :) I just need to make some new types of shovels, then maybe get into mining more so myself.

You can mine for gold or you can sell supplies to the miners. Goldrush. Two distinct groups of people. One group hearing stories of people finding gold poured in to seek their fortune. A second group came along selling supplies to all of the "fools" seeking their fortune. Guess which group was much more likely to make a lot of money.

I'll let @GarBenjamin answer what he meant by it, but the way I see it is there are a lot of people now trying to make money with games. That's a whole lot of people who can use assets, tools, pre-made games, advice books (or sites), etc. You can make a living from that and never even make a game yourself.

What do you mean "so"? I wasn't stating anything, I was asking a question, as if that is what they had meant. o_O

That is exactly what I meant.

The real demand now is not for new games.
The demand now is for "supplies" to make better games easier and faster.

Programmers need graphics (2d and 3d)
    Artists need visual scripting tools
    Music
    Sound FX
A "notebook" of game design concepts
Courses on how to do something game dev related easier and faster
    Books on the same
Training on how to make graphics (for programmers)
Tools to support game dev (map editors, terrain editors, whatever)
    Starter kits

    Create supplies and tools.

Or to really hit the boom look ahead to when this market is also flooded and create supplies and tools for the supply and tool developers.

    OK, I'm getting you now.

I think I'll go make supplies and tools for the people who make supplies and tools for the people who make supplies and tools for making games!

I certainly wouldn't call any of the game devs fools... not ever. It is very legitimate. Sure there are some "gold rushers" who think they will come in and make a fortune with little to no effort, but it doesn't represent the indie community. Besides, there really are very view indies that are making a game by themselves...everyone has their talents. Some folks are talented at graphics, some are talented at coding, or sound. Each piece working together can make a great team and product. In this case, the "shovels" are there to make game creation faster and easier because they certainly beat digging with your hands, or better yet, trying to build your own forge and whittle your own shovel handle... if you've found enough gold to buy a shovel, why waste the time creating one? :)

Whether they think they can come in and make a fortune with little to no effort or with a ton of effort is no different really. I am sure a lot of the gold rush miners worked their asses off to find that gold with no to little success.

Exactly! That is what I mean. It is smart for any game dev to buy as many supplies and tools as they can afford to make the game dev as easy and quick as possible. If a person is serious about doing this I think they would buy anything they could that makes it easier and faster to make better games. I have made several map editors over the years but instead of making yet another one to work with my Unity projects I simply bought SpriteTile on the asset store. That saved me time and effort. I wish there were more things on there that I could buy to speed up my dev work.

That "fools" reference was for the gold miners. A common term as many of them ended up finding fools gold. Not meant for the game devs! lol

I can be happy starting with $300/month. But $2000/month would be a success because I could rent a house.

    Yup. Got it on 2010.

Dunno right now. I know there's plenty of programmer jobs, many co-workers had already left the organization for another job (better paid). I'be been in the same place for 5 years, and achieve the analyst position, while i also do the develop of that analysis, and also distribute tasks to complete my analysis.

Although I've a decent wage, I'd like as you, make an extra (U$D) and use it in this shameless country of ours :p

That would work out about $140k a year. More than most dentists get... the greedy bloodsuckers. ("Oh, I can't fix your tooth for less than $2000. I need to pay for my holiday chalet in the Alps.")

Certainly not unheard of though... although I'm not sure about game development specific, but as a senior .NET developer you can certainly get that. There are senior / architect level .NET jobs even here in Omaha, NE that pay that and higher.

My post was sarcasm. Should have put a smiley face on it. There are several threads that @yoonitee has commented on lately that show he has a very different understanding of economics and money to the rest of us.

I have no problem with a professional in a challenging job, with a high entrance barrier, and a scarce skill set charging high rates for there time. Its how I make my living in my day job.

Well my dentist used to look in my mouth for about 30 seconds. Tell me I didn't need any fillings and charge by £20. I wish I could make £20 that quickly. The sooner there is an iPhone app that can check if you need fillings the better.

There will be a time when this so-called "medical knowledge" is worthless since we can just scan ourselves with tricorders.

Also the only way possible for that is making use of the camera, make an app that:

    a) Has x-ray mode and can take pics of you tooth.
    b) can draw little place spots of the cavity.

either way, it won't be possible for a LONG time, at least in tech terms.

And from that £20 he has to pay rent, wages, utilities, professional fees and student loan. He also has to cover the time of day where he doesn't have a patient to charge, when people cancel, or business is just slow.

So sure, the dentist probably makes a decent take home wage as well. But its not at £20 per 30 seconds.

What for? I live in a socialist country where pretty much everything medical gets covered by the government. Health insurance is practically unheard of.

We do use private insurance for house, contents, vehicles and the like.

Like I said, what good does it do me? At the best its a very expensive premium to cut a couple of weeks off the waiting list if something does happen to me. Pretty much all of our medical care is provided for from our taxes.

I'm probably going to get a thread lock for this, its inflammatory and I apologise. But let me describe American freedom as seen from an outsider. As you read this realise that I am as much a product of my cultural background as you are of yours.

    • You have the freedom to bear arms. This comes with the freedom to have your kids shot as they attend high school or the movies.
    • You have freedom to use you money pretty much however you see fit. Little to no taxes and services. You also have the freedom to starve and go without medical care if due to bad management or bad luck you can't afford it.
    • You have the freedom to be incredibly rich. Along with this comes the freedom to be incredibly poor.
    • You have a general freedom from market regulations. You also have the freedom to crash the global world economy.
You can run through several other example of this. You country has some of the most spectacular successes in the world. But it also has some of the most spectacular failures. That's why I consider American freedom to be overrated.

Things have been relatively civil lately. My comments alone would not cause a thread lock. But at one point they could have caused a flame war that got things locked down.

I'm not sure I trust this new civil version of the internet... I like it, but it just seems wrong.
