This is an announcement for an open source toolkit (called bmlTUX) for helping to design research experiments in Unity. I am the primary developer working in BioMotionLab at York University, Toronto, Canada, with head supervisor Dr. Nikolaus Troje.

The package provides an easy-to-use Unity inspector interface for quickly creating experimental designs, and provides a simple API for scripting how your experiment should manipulate a Unity scene. It’s fully compatible with SteamVR.

    Some of its features include:
    • Free and open source
    • VR compatible
    • Can make trial-based experiments quickly with very little coding
    • Can automatically handle counterbalancing/randomization etc.
    • Great for Behavioral or Perception research where 3D graphics are needed.

The package is currently in Beta, but we are using it internally for several ongoing projects, and other labs worldwide are beginning to use it as well. If you have any suggestions or discover any bugs, please post an issue on our GitHub page:

I hope the community finds the tool helpful! We have found it saves us tons of time getting experiments up and running quickly, and makes the whole process much faster than before.

If you use the package, please remember to cite our work!
