animation toolbar isn't working

Hi I'm new to Unity. I've been building a FFS game and I was playing around with animation when I came across this problem. As you can see from the attachment when I click on 'animation' nothing appears that allows me to create an animation. Its a really difficult problem to describe.

If anyone has any ideas on how to solve this I'd really appreciate it because I haven't adjusted the settings etc or done anything to my knowledge for it to be like this so I'm not sure why this has happened.

Please comment, even if I've I've made some really dumb beginners mistake!
