Question Animating separate bodyparts with 2D Pixel Art

    I've two questions/issues:

    1. Would I need to create a separate animation clip for each individual variant of each bodypart? It seems this is the only way, even with research. Is there another method so I don't have 30 animation clips (most of which will be variants)

    2. Animating multi-component 2d sprites (ears, tail, muzzle, base, etc). Before, I gave them all their own separate animator controllers and animation clips. That worked. But it was highly out of sync and it was clear that's not only a bad route to go, but it's not working.
    Example of issue:

    Right now however, they all have their own separate layers under one animator controller instead. I am having issue figuring out how each layer knows which gameobject/bodypart its supposed to be animating.
