I just started with 3d stuff in unity and I found it awesome.

I just imported a simple maya 3d character in unity as displayed in the picture below.

I want to add a simple iddle animation inside unity3d instead of importing from maya. Is there anyway to accomplish that?

    thanks

Yes there is (or at least I believe I can help you)

If you download the "Stealth" assets from the unity store (used in the Stealth tutorial) it will give you a wide variety of animations for biped models. Although it comes with an ethan model and a robot... as long as you import a rigged biped model it works with anything. (comes with an idle animation as you wanted)

Also search the unity store for free 3d models.. a lot of them come pre-rigged and with animations for bipeds. By doing this you can build up a ton of animations to use in future games (I have 15 animations plus an additional 13 I made myself)
