"An Error Occurred" on Restore

Morning folks,

So I've got this super annoying issue where when attempting to Restore to my latest build it errors out. The collab history tab says "An Error Occurred", while the Collab dropdown say "Cannot download entry". If I go to the version before that, it doesn't download the changes either, even though I can see them in the changelog - but it also does not provide an error message.

I at first assumed this was an issue with Hub, and so reinstalled it to version 1.6 (because 2.0 is super awful) and redownloaded the project completely, but have the same issue. I then uninstalled and reinstalled Collab, to no avail. I would appreciate some guidance, as this puts me behind a few days, and I've already spent about half a day on it.

Specifics: started about 14 hours ago
Every time I re-open the project, it seems to ask me again to relink the project

Hi @Simon-R, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues using Restore. Is it only Restore operations that are erroring out for you? What about Publishes and Updates?

Your Editor log would help us debug the issue more, but try launching the Hub with "-enableCollabEventLogs", without the quotes, then try to Restore again. After that, you can DM me your log file so that we can help look for any additional error messaging from Collab.

 

Unfortunately not. I cannot "Go Back To" previous versions either. It consistently fails and seems to do more damage, with a growing set of "pending changes" remaining each time. I've considered uninstalling/reinstalling both windows and Unity...not quite that desperate yet, but getting close, and obviously unhappy about it. Sending logs now.

 

Well, uninstalling and deleting all local / cache files didn't seem to help. Re-downloading the entire project yielded the same result. This is increasingly frustrating, as not only have I lost work I've already done, but lost the ability to progress further.

 

In case anyone else runs into the issues: completely purging Unity and Hub from my system alone did not do anything, but I was able to revert to a good build by re-downloading the project using a 1.x version of Hub (2.x is awful imho) go back to an old version, and somehow still had pending changes. I pushed those into a garbage build, then reverted to my latest good build, and the errors disappeared. 3 days of working time lost, super frustrating, but at least I've got my project back.

 

Hi Simon. I'm so sorry that you ran into these issues and lost so much time. I'd like to prevent that from ever happening again.

When you re-downloaded the project using 1.x of the Hub you said you were able to go back to an older version. Were you still seeing errors when you tried to Restore after that or did you encounter different errors?

As for the pending changes that you had when you used Go Back, that sounds like Collab was behaving as expected. Using Restore is meant to undo all local changes and bring you back to the latest version you last pushed to Collab, leaving you fully synced with that version. Using Go Back is meant to bring you to an earlier commit and mark all changes you made between the last commit and that one as pending changes. From there you can either pick and choose which changes to keep or undo all of them and essentially create a whole new branch to work from, which sounds a little like what you did to unblock yourself, except that you pushed those changes to a new UPID. After that you relinked to your old project and everything was working as expected again. Am I understanding you right?

Correct, I was seeing the same errors whenever I attempted to Restore to the latest build. I am still quite confused how I could purge everything Unity related, the project included, from my machine, and still have changes to be uploaded. It wasn't until I published a build that I was able to restore to a build that worked.

This part was correct, however, I wasn't able to even manually discard changes. It's like I'd lost the ability to do anything with my project until I published the changes (when I hadn't actually changed anything).

However, all of that being said, I just started working on it after taking a break, and all of a sudden I have 1755 asset changes out of nowhere. I am concerned. While everything still works, I don't think the issue is fully resolved. If you could take a gander at the logs I sent you, I'd appreciate it.

 

Of course, I want to get you unblocked and back in business.

Thank you for clarifying things for me. In the files that Collab thought had changes, did you try hovering over them and using the "See differences" button to launch them with a diff tool to see what has changed? If nothing has changed then that's a problem, but it could be that there might be a hash getting modified by a shader (or something similar) periodically that Collab is detecting as a change.

I noticed in the log you shared with me that it looks like Unity is having issues trying to move files around in some cache folders. These folders are located in "C:/Users/Simon/AppData/LocalLow/Unity/Browser/Cache", which would explain why reinstalling the project would still have you seeing these errors. I'm not fully certain that these are related to the errors you're experiencing with Collab but I'd like to try addressing them first to see if it helps.

In "C:/Users/Simon/AppData/LocalLow/Unity/Browser/", delete all the contents in the Cache folder. After doing that, restart Unity and reopen your project to see if you are still running into any errors.
