AMD to 3D Stack DRAM and SRAM on Processors

    So the industry is trying to circumvent inherent limits that are being reached.



    The ability to scale and gain higher frequency processing (faster CPUs) is showing diminishing returns.



    Node scaling is also slowing down.

    So going 3D and stacking memory and processors can give the industry a shot in the arm in performance that it cannot obtain from scaling or potential gains in speed.



    The article mentions actual 3D stacking via BGA (ball grid array) or DRAM onto CPU chips.

    Interesting article, but the frequency brick wall we've hit has nothing really to do with 3D stacking. 3D stacking isn't really about performance as much as it is about physical space utilization.
