How to configure low ambient light with a physically based sky?

This cave is far too brightly lit and I believe it's the ambient light.
The config is- an empty hdrp default volume and one global volume.
The global volume just has 'visual environment' and 'physically based sky'.

I've tried setting the Lighting Override Mask (within HDRP asset) to a second global volume, but couldn't work out the right combinations of components.

In the built-in renderer, I'd use the "Intensity Multiplier".

I think it's your directional light is too intense.

If I reduce the directional light, the whole scene fades, but cave relatively still too bright.
I think environment ambient should be independent.

The documentation says ~15k for the sun and correct with autoexposure.
However, that also shows ambient in shaded areas too brightly.

Within the 'visual environment' component, Ive tried setting ambient mode static and dynamic.
No static or baking involved here.

    It's the ground light.
Just change the "Ground Tint" and/or the "Ground Emission Multiplier" in your PBS override.

That was it. Thanks so much for replying.
I had to change the tint. Multiplier to zero didn't work

this result is normal. instead of turning down the ambient light, if there is no realtime light movement. Bake the lightmap with mixed light or bake realtime lightmap and add reflection probe. add light probe for dynamic objects.

    Hey everyone,

I also wanted to chime in on this for anyone looking in the future. Beyond the Ground Tint and Ground Texture components, you may also need to turn off the Sky Reflection parameter in the HDRP Default Settings:
