This is apparently a known problem from the Amazon side of things as described here:
    https://forums.developer.amazon.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=5619

So I'll just quote Amazon's own developer:

Any plans to fix this? I'm having real trouble replicating the problem (that is, I don't see it every time), which makes me worried about implementing this crazy "fix" that intentionally reverses the orientation.

Its been a battle for a couple years now. I plan to lock to a single view, no rotation on next update. Others have had their apps approved like this.

Great - now I get to spend the whole day updating my games on Amazon.

    In the 4.3 release notes (http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-4.3) there's a
    * Android: Fixed default orientation for 3rd gen kindle devices

    Is this it ?

If not, has this been reported to Unity ? If yes, can you point to the issue in the tracker ?

    Thanks!

It's apparently busted again as my Unity 4.5.5 app just got rejected for this very issue on Fire HDX 8.9 devices. What a crock of crap.

e: for some clarification this is apparently only for Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Gen) devices. maybe the new hardware somehow re-broke it?

Had this issue on a submission for all HDX devices using Unity 4.6.3.

Wasn't something I could recreate though
