The addressables system seems to include the whole of an .fbx file if I use any of the individual elements.

For instance if I use the table .fbx below but use different materials/textures in-game it still includes the embedded materials in the addressables asset bundle.

Can Unity be persuaded to exclude unused assets inside an .fbx, or is a .fbx file an "All for one and one for all" situation?

Even deleting the materials from the FBX prefab does not seem to make any difference.

What if you exclude them via the import settings?

Sometimes the model is used with textures, sometimes without. I can't remove them without breaking the other instances.

I wouldn't bother trying to import materials from external 3d programs. Strip them via the import settings, make better materials in Unity.
