Games AG SSC Racer - (free) download available PC, Mac, Xbox...

    NOTE: This is the first of a number of Tech Demo games we are working on.

    The first one is AG SSC Racer.

    We’re working on a small anti-gravity game built on top of Sci Fi Ship Controller (SSC). Its purpose is to demonstrate how games like those from the popular F-Zero or WipEout series, could be built with the asset.

    You could think of AG SSC Racer as a kind of tech demo. It provides:
    • a bit of entertainment for you
    • some light relief for our team (while testing of course...)
    • us with opportunities to discover and solve real game dev problems
    • with the ability to add new features and test them in a real game
    We’ve taken advantage of the following features in SSC:
    • Ship Arcade physics model
    • Limiting pitch and roll
    • Stick to Ground Surface
    • The Anti-gravity demo scene
    • Ship AI with path following
    • New Unity Input System integration
    • Damage system with respawning
    The current Windows 10 version can be downloaded from our website (scroll all the way to the bottom). After downloading the file, unzip it to a folder. The first time you run it you may get a prompt to say it is unsafe. That is because it is an unsigned app.

    It should work with most gamepads on Windows 10. For keyboard use WSAD for direction, up-arrow for thrusters, and down-arrow for the air brakes.

    Pause / Restart / Quit = start/option button on gamepad, or mouse

    The Xbox One version is now available, just search "AG SSC Racer" in the Microsoft store.

    NOTE: There are many other styles of games you can create with Sci-Fi Ship Controller. This is just one example.

    We've posted an update. We've moved to a single combined pause menu (resume, restart, quit) which will provide some consistency across PC and Xbox One (UWP).

    There are also a few bug fixes.

    We have a build working on Xbox One under the Creators Program which essentially runs as a Universal Windows Platform deployment with Xbox Live integration.

    For those interested, the UWP project is using:
    • Sci-Fi Ship Controller v1.1.1 Beta 2
    • Unity 2019.3.0f3
    • Built-in Render Pipeline
    • API Compatibility Level .NET 4.x
    • IL2CPP Scripting Backend
    • Unity's "new" Input System 1.0.0 preview 3
    • Windows SDK 10.0.17763.0
    • Visual Studio 2017

    As we now have gamepad rubble / force feedback support in the latest beta of Sci-Fi Ship Controller, we've added that to AG SSC Racer too.

    AI ships now attempt to get available PowerUps (boost, immunity, or health) so you may need to work a little harder at getting the one's you need.

    We have started work on the Android tablet version and we're working on the Xbox Live integration for the Xbox One version.

    The Xbox tech demo game is now live on the Xbox Store!

    On your Xbox One, just search for "AG SSC Racer" to get this free game.

    Hey sstrong, I wanted to ask what Unity Version and New Input System Version are you using? I can't seem to make builds with the ones I'm using as they always crash Unity. Thanks.

    In Sci-Fi Ship Controller (the asset used to create this tech demo game), the new Unity Input System works with Unity 2019.1.x, 2019.2.x and 2019.3. It even works with the later 2020.1 alpha versions.

    We've tested with the new Input system 1.0.0 preview 3 and 4. Earlier versions "worked" but had several issues. What is you setup?

    Mac OSX Version - now available

    This (free) version is now available for download from our Sci-Fi Ship Controller website (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page).

    If you have the Xbox controller driver installed on your Mac, you can use an Xbox One controller, else the keyboard WSAD + arrow keys as described can be used.

    This version was developed with the following:
    • Sci-Fi Ship Controller v1.1.1 Release
    • Unity 2019.3.0f5
    • Built-in Render Pipeline
    • API Compatibility Level .NET Standard 2.0
    • Scripting Backend: Mono
    • Unity's "new" Input System 1.0.0 preview 4
    Although, we could have used U2019.1 or U2019.2 (Unity's new Input system requires 2019.1+).

    Tech Demo Game #2

    We are working on another Tech Demo game (also based on Sci-Fi Ship Controller). This one is more ambitious than AG SSC Racer and will have the following elements:

    Enemy
    Enemy Base with ground-based defence system - one of your missions is to destroy this
    Capital Ship with AI turrets and targeting
    Small fighter craft to defend Base and engage with you and your fighters

    The good guys (that's you!)
    A small fast fighter that you fly
    A few squadrons of AI fighters that help you complete missions

    We're planning to release this on Windows 10, Xbox One and (hopefully) Android.

    This game will bring together multiple features of Sci-Fi Ship Controller including:
    • Ship AI
    • Radar
    • Arcade and Physics Mode ships
    • Weapon systems
    • Localised Damage and FX
    • Mission-based objectives with AI
    Please let us know if there is something you'd like us to demonstrate in this next Tech Demo Game.

    All the models and code will "ship" with a future version of Sci-Fi Ship Controller.

    We recently got the following review and 4-star rating of our Tech Demo #1 (AG SSC Racer) on Xbox One. Not a bad effort for a free tech demo...

    "4 because it's a lot for a free game, & you can fly all over, even off and around the track. Music is cool. I keep coming back to it because it's got a fun Logan's Run feel to it!"

    Our Tech Demos are built on top of Sci-Fi Ship Controller.
