I'm making a world war one game. I'm having trouble with the terrain. As the game is set in No Man's Land everything looks muddy and bland. I have added craters, small details, and some post processing to make the colours brighter.

I am not sure what else I can do to make it look more interesting. Any suggestions on what I can do to make it more visually appealing? Any ideas on what I can do to make the terrain less bland, such a texture ideas?

Here is a screen shot of my level:

Advice... stop and look at either real WW1 pics/videos or pics/videos of other WW1 games...

It looks very clean! I think a big part of that is the textures. For example, the one in the foreground looks more suited to a desert or dried riverbed or something, I'd be expecting a lot more churned up wet mud. That'd add more visual interest straight away, due to the light reflecting off the less uniform surface. There would probably be water collecting in the craters, too.

Perhaps some fires and columns of smoke, too? You could have some fairly obvious ones, like from things burning, but also some smoke that was barely perceptible, which would just give a less uniform, slightly murky feel rather than the clear horizons

Yes, a "choppy water" look where 1000s of boot prints have been seems apt not suggesting you use water but how its done may give key indications on how to make it loop churned up
