So I accidentally changed an FBX and it reimported into Unity and now the model won't render. Is there any way to gently get this model back to where it was in Unity without recreating the entire object?

Not if your not using some sort of source control. This is why I have git LFS, I recommend that so you dont lose work in the future.

My stubborn self didn't commit the whole project - only scripts. Lesson learned.

I am a bit curious if there are any methods for getting Unity to re-recognize a mesh that had changed - Basically rebuilding whatever identifiers it used to map it to the original mesh and changing it to the new one. The mesh I changed was only the mesh, not the armature. I'm guessing it's just an identifier somewhere.
