Here's our predicament. We have lots of artists, dotted around the planet, making prefabs for us coders to use in our games. They don't need a pro version, just the ability to import models, set up materials and shaders, and check them in to our Asset Server repo.

Now, they could try exporting them as Unity packages, but more often than not, that doesn't work.
We all could use an industry standard source code control system, but Unity doesn't (sensibly) support them.

As it stands we either have to have one artist with a pro license, who gathers all the models/anims from each artist, do all the mat/shader stuff, prefab them, and check them in. Or, each artist has to fork out a huge wodge of money, to just be able to deliver his work.

So, my wish would be either to allow asset server licenses to be used alongside the free version of unity, or for a standalone asset server client to be made. Or, worst case, proper support for svn ;)

    Thanks!

    Mark

Yeah id like to see this too, purely for the art side. It means artist are having to buy the Pro + Asset Server side of things just to submit assets to a project even though they are not involved in any development of the project.

Pretty surely not going to happen. It was already kind of a comitment that the VCS support happened for Pro and not only for VCS licensees, I doubt you will get a $500 / seat way to bypass Unity Pro as $0 is already $800 short of what you get with the free unity in relation to pro :)

Also without Pro its only of limited use as you lose editor pipeline features that are pretty regularly used together with the AS Client.

The idea after all is that professional teams get Pro otherwise people could come up with the idea to ignore the 100k requirement for incorporated teams and alike if they could work fine as team on little to no costs ...
