    Hi all,

Don't get mad at me because of me posting a topic without doing proper research, I just like to get people's opinions.

My question is, what you can NOT do with Unity?

I've used GameSalad about 2 years ago and it was a very limited tool. Than I've been studying Computer Engineering and I want to change the way I make the game/app. I want to go a little more "pro" :p

But what are the limits of this tool? Not that I'll probably push the boundaries but I just wonder.

    Here it goes;

1-) Could you make this game in Unity for example? --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7uOhFTrrq0 (Terraria)

2-) If you can't, why not? Is it the performance issues? If the performance would let us, is it doable?

3-) Can you get online/multiplayer game capabilities?

4-) Can you edit/manipulate photos/videos taken by an iOS device on an iOS App?

5-) Can you list a few of the downsides of the engine? What gives you the most headache?

6-) Can you list a few big/important features that you think it is missing?

7-) Could you make this game in Unity? --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shhmFJJ6-Bg (Under The Ocean)

 Could you make this game in Unity? --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txc0leJrcEw (Gnomoria)

I have some C/C++ (2 years of Computer Engineering University) experience. Would it help a lot in my learning curve? And I'll most probably be doing mobile apps/games for the first year at least. Do you think it is a good idea to use this Engine when there are other *easier* tools like Corona or GameSalad?

Please answer at least few of them :p

    Thanks a LOT in advance!

99% chance you're the limitation, not Unity. Probably closer to 100% though.

When asking "Can I make a game like X in Unity" the answer is always "if you can program it, you can make it". It's an engine, not a gamemaker app. If it's missing a function you want, then you program it. In some of the more esoteric cases you might need Unity Pro for the native plugins (though on iOS/Android you don't even need Pro for that).

I think in your case, the only downside is that you need to pay to develop for a mobile platform.

I see. So I really needed to do some more research. Turns out I don't even know what the Unity 'is'. Well I've been doing a research on 'game-making apps' and Unity's name came up a lot, so I assumed it was another kind of tool.

I'll watch some videos, read some documentation and come back with some more accurate questions.

Thanks a lot tho, that helped.

All these questions have been answered many times before over the years and googling each one will give more than enough for you to research for yourself and read in depth various answers and opinions.

You can make any game provided you have the knowledge to program it. For networking take a look at uLink.
