    Beta Trailer:

What is 99 Levels To Hell
99 Levels to Hell is a platform shooter with lots of guns, upgrades, magic, traps and monsters to kill.

99 Levels to Hell is a rogue-like, which means surviving is key and every time you play you get a new set of levels to play.
When you complete 10 levels, the 10th being a boss-fight you unlock a door to the next dungeon.

Hidden in the darkness of the dungeons are shops, casinos and elevators.

And if you search the dungeons carefully, you might find secret rooms that unlock more of the story, and free new adventurers, you can play as in your next game.

I like the in game graphics. I can see the character is vector based but are the environments done in photoshop?

@SevenBits a lot of games inspired this, :) I want to try and make game that changes every time you play. To be more specific "the binding of isaac" and "Diablo 2" are propperly the biggist influences, all though I would like the 2 player to feel like a hellish version of "bobble, bubble".

@SterlingDee thanks! nothing in the game is vector based, everything is drawn i photoshop and put together with Sprite Manager 2

    Good job bome!

    Pros:
    - I like the visuals in general.
    - Randomly generated levels? Hell yeah!!
    - I like the music.
    - I like the blood efffects!
    - I like a lot of particles!
    - I like the level editor.
    - I like the fact that you want to make it a coop game!

    Cons:
    - I don't like the main character... doesn't seem to fit in the world. He's not your typical dungeon/castle explorer. He lacks personality and is unattractive to me. Poor him. Sorry. :)
    - I don't like the shooting animation.
    - I don't like the walking animation.
    - I would like a web player version so we don't have to download every version you will release. :)
    - I played the game on my laptop and it wasn't smooth. 8-15 fps on a dual core 2.0ghz with 2 gigs of ram and a dedicated videocard that runs Team Fortress 2 just fine.
    - Would like to be able to play fullscreen! Will help with the framerate.
    - Game menus don't look like the ones on the screenshots above.

    Bugs:
    - When you click "Enter the Dungeon", you don't play right away and there's no "Loading" message so you think the game froze.
    - There was a treasure chest stuck inside rocks that I couldn't shoot. (maybe I can destroy rocks with bombs?)
    - Didn't know what collecting gold was used for (probably used to buy stuff in a shop)

    Overall, good job!!!
    Keep up the good work!

I like the main character personally!

but since it seems like you are ok with constructive criticism - I don't like the name of the game. The style of the graphics and look of the main character are mass appeal and could even appeal to younger or female players, but the name of the game is a little vicious and tonally different to the look of the game imo. From reading the game name and looking at the game logo, I would expect adult/violent gameplay, but looking at the gameplay graphics and character design I would expect "suitable for all ages" gameplay. Haven't played it, so not sure which one it is. Hope this makes sense!

    @SterlinDee all critic is welcome.
The game is really bloody and you are going 99 levels down towards HELL! So I think the title fits the game.

@MoonQuake Update will be up next week ;) I hope.

Very impressive graphics. I like how you've made a visual editor for making new levels, if it's as easy as it seem there's no reason not to make it 999 level to hell ;-)

Hate the music though (first video), but I nearly always do.

Looks great - Held og lykke!

bome, still didn't answer some of the concerns of my long post above... could you take a moment to answer. I'm sure a lot of people wonder about the same things as me. :)

    - I played the game on my laptop and it wasn't smooth. 8-15 fps on a dual core 2.0ghz with 2 gigs of ram and a dedicated videocard that runs Team Fortress 2 just fine. Is there a way you could optimize the game or add graphics quality options?

    - Fullscreen option?

    - When you click "Enter the Dungeon", you don't play right away and there's no "Loading" message so you think the game froze.

    - There was a treasure chest stuck inside rocks that I couldn't shoot. (maybe I can destroy rocks with bombs?)

    - Didn't know what collecting gold was used for (probably used to buy stuff in a shop)

    Thanks,

    MQ

I'm sorry I've been really busy with the next build, some of the issues should be fix now.

    I've added fullscreen option.
Sadly I can't build a webplayer, with the current light setting.
The main character doesn't change, I might add some more animations but I would like to keep it simple so it's easy to do more characters.
Yeah you need bombs to blow up rocks.
    I added a tutorial.
And yes now there is a shop

You can download the newest version right here http://99levelstohell.blogspot.com/p/download.html

I know the levels are randomly generated, but is the background as well? and what size of textures are you using?

Not randomly generated, but randomly selected. The background changes every 10th level as you change dungeon. Texture atlases vairy from 1024 to 2048. Each square is 128 by 128?

    Hi every one.
I made new video showing what's new in 0.3.0.

This update has been all about making the game more fun. So some new rules have been added. First, we now have a Heart-cap, this means that you can only carry 5 hearts at the time, until you level up your Heart-cap. You can now level up your weapons to level 3, and add boosts such as Range, Damage and Bullet size.

There is a time limit on the levels, that will start hell-mode if you take too long. I rewritten the jumping so it's easier to control, and some enemies will now charge you. Most of the graphic bits have been redrawn and lightened to make it easier to see where you are going.

    Have fun!!

    Changelog ALPHA 0.3.0:

    Bugfixes:

    • [li]Curser aim improved
      No more than one pet

Build 0.4.0 Released – Last Alpha Build before BETA

Build 0.4.0 has been released, lots of great stuff in the update.

This will be the last Alpha, which mean that at next release the price of the game will go up.

This also means that I have had to scale down the game, to be able finish with in reasonable time.
It always hurts to cut out stuff, but I think it was necessary. The game was changed at a lot and the focus has shifted.

This means that two player is gone. It's really sad, but it would change some of the basics that make the single player so much fun.

I now want to make the best single player experience I can make, not to say that two player will never happen.

    Changelog ALPHA 0.4.0:

    Bugfixes:
Bossfight – S*** just got REAL!!
    New controls
You can now jump from ladder
PickUp and enter doors on E
    Jump on Space

    Added features:
    Traps:
    triggered trap
    spike trap

    Casino:
    Slut Machine Gold, Heart, Bomb

    Special Items:
    Black-hole
    Protectors
    Magic Skull
    Orbs
    Green
    Ice
    Purple
    Symbols
    Heart
    Pentagram
    Satanic
    Eye
    Ghost

    Sounds:
    trap sounds
    death sounds
    Bat
    Box
    Skull
    Machine
    New BossFight Track!!

Beta Log and Steam Greenlight news

Things are moving fast, the Beta 1.0.0 will be released very soon.

When the Beta is released the discount will drop 50% off to 25% off, so hurry up and get the game cheap.

I just learned that I'll be able to give out Steam keys to everyone who bought the the game via Desura or the Groupees Bundle, still running for 6 days. So please go to Steam Greenlight and upvote the game.

    The official Greenlight status:
“100% of the way to making the top 100” 17,064 visits 778 Favorits."

I've also updated the demo to a Beta Demo(Mac and Windows), so go try it before you buy it!

A big thing in the Beta is the added story-line. I've been so lucky to get a lot of help from Graham Cookson Chris Powell from the Bitloaders podcast. They are writing an awesome story-line for the game and my good mate Simon Poole is doing a great job with the voice-over.

So thanks a ton Graham, Chris and Simon, this really adds a lot to the overall feeling of the game :D

This time we are adding quite a few new tunes to the game as well, Dalle has been hard at work creating some really awesome new tracks and sounds.

Spider Boss Theme, Casino Inferno, Secret Room is just a few of the new ones, listen to the full soundtrack here.

If you are updating from a previous version, I recommend going to options and reset the game before starting your adventure, just to make sure you don't get any PlayerPref bugs.

Last you should check out the About section I just changed it to something new and more fitting for the game.

    Small teaser for the Beta!

We have an official release date, 26th of February the final game will be out on GOG.com, Desura.com and IndieCity.com.

    Release Trailer

    99 LEVELS TO HELL?!
Yes - well, actually there's 100 levels to descend in this game. No, you won't survive. By now you should have got around to playing Spelunky and have surely got a taste for challenging indie roguelikes with a focus on platforming. 99 Levels To Hell is cut from the same cloth as Spelunky but comes coated in a metal soundtrack and more guns, blood, and top hat tomfoolery than anything else before it (probably).
Of course, this being a roguelike means that permanent death is in place. You CAN save the game and return to it at a later point, but if you die then you'll have to restart and the levels will be randomized once again. However, you can unlock dungeons by defeating one of the ferocious bosses that you'll encounter every 10 levels. Say, for instance, you get to level 10 and defeat that boss, you'll then unlock the dungeon to level 11 so you can continue on from there. Simples.*
    UNLOCKABLES AND UPGRADES
Dwelling on the 10 level structure, 99 Levels To Hell has 10 different environments for you to struggle through, and these are divided by (yes, you guessed it!) tiers of 10 levels. As you progress through the game you'll happen across shops where you can buy upgrades and new weapons - some of them even fire lasers - and if you're lucky you may even find portals that will help you out a little. The game contains over 25 monsters to discover and battle, as well as over 50 power ups and weapons to get your grubby mitts on. More unusual findings include casinos, elevators and secret rooms. The latter of which will unlock more of the game's story and some may even hide new characters you can then play as once you've freed them.
