Unfortunately, that is one of those things you just have to do. There is no magic way to lay out UVs. I have heard good things about Headus, but it is expensive and for me not any easier than Maya LT for making UVs. You still have to mark and cut seams and unfold/unwrap. I recommend starting with a crate and working your way up to more complex models. No one likes to do that, but it truly is the best way to learn.
