5.3.4 Slow performance issues ?

Anybody else getting really slow performance ?

Just upgraded, imported my project and it almost grinds to a halt, I go from a steady 60+ fps, down to barely 15 fps.

I'm having to reinstall 5.3.3 again, as the performance is just too dire to work with. Any ideas why, I'm afraid I'm not savvy enough to work out the issues based on the stats counter, but at first glance, it seems like it's rendering everything twice over, as the amount of tris and verts has doubled for no reason, dsp load is twice what it was, and the cpu load has gone from 14ms to 66ms ? Really disappointed that I can't upgrade, is there anything obvious that has changed in 5.3.4 that would break my game this way ?

Hello playmint, can you create a small repro case and fill a bug report so that we can investigate?

I have the same issue. The space shooter tutorial was running very well on 5.3.3 (in the editor), after upgrading to 5.3.4, editor performance is grinding to a halt, practically impossible to play in the editor.
I have both versions of unity installed, video driver and windows are up to date.

    UPDATE:

I found a post that actually helped me solve the issue, which is related to using EVGA's PrecisionX software. Here's the link: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/un...renderered-useless-because-of-fps-lag.348949/

I disabled the PrecisionX server and the editor went back to performing optimally (both versions), so this may help you, if it is your case. Good luck.

Thanks, but that seems pretty pc specific. I'm on a Mac.

I will install 5.3.4 in a seperate location at some point, and compare the two, to see if I can figure out what's changed across the scene setup. Putting a lot of work into my current project at the moment, so hadn't initially wanted to devote the time to 'test' things.

Ok, had a chance to test this today, I've ran both 5.3.3 and 5.3.4 side by side with the exact same project loaded, I've checked over every possible option that might have changed in the project update to 5.3.4 ( but that's not to say there isn't something I've missed... ), but couldn't find anything obvious, here are the results :

@Ignacio Liverotti , how does one go about creating a bug report ?

    Hi, Ignacio

Pm'd you the case number, wasn't sure how the bug system works, and didn't want my zipped project files shared publicly so marked the case as private.

Curious how this works though, is it general bug submission that will get looked at over time by unity staff only, or will I get any personal feedback on this should a solution be forthcoming ?

Any chance you can also test Unity 5.4 Beta 12 latest and see what results you get?
    Cheers

I'll give it a shot over the weekend. Not heard back from Ignacio, and don't even know if my bug report will generate any feedback to me personally ?

    Ok, 5.4 Beta 12.

Pretty much the same if not slightly worse fps, I get an average of between 12 - 15 fps, game is slow and jerky as hell to play. Think I'm going to have to stick with 5.3.3 until I get this game finished, annoying...

    Hi, @MrEsquire

No, no feedback whatsoever, I'm not even sure if I will receive any feedback either ? Or whether it's just another logged bug in a long list.. :(

However, slightly better news, after a bit more digging, I think I may have found the issue, I just posted this in the asset publishers thread, it seems a plugin I'm using in my game could be causing the performance issue, so I'm hoping the author can update / fix his plugin to work better with 5.3.4 or anything higher :

I am seeing similar issues on my mac. Just installed 5.3.4p1 today (was in 5.2.3p4 previously) and the editor is just super laggy. Dragging around in the scene view is jittery, and trying to reposition gameobjects in the hierarchy (ie move something from one parent to another) causes the hierarchy to lock up until I leave unity and come back in.

This is on a retina 5k imac if that helps. I have noticed problems with my retina machines before. I am uploading a gif, which hopefully works.

    laggy.gif

I also noticed that just dragging something in the hierarchy (like in the gif) causes Unity's cpu usage to go from 30% to 100%

More Info: I dont know if this is related the to frame rate issue from above, but the dragging issue in my last post is still there in 5.3.3. Cannot drag things around the hierarchy. It just never finishes. I have to leave unity and come back to make the UI responsive again.
In 5.2.4p4 it works fine. Same project same dragging.
In 5.4beta it works, but is pretty laggy. dragging anything around the hierarchy is janky and slow. This is on a new iMac 5k bought about a month ago, so not old hardware.

Yet More Info! I found what I think is the issue. I had an OnDrawGizmos method that was doing some fairly expensive transform child traversal every frame (it was a bug) and in unity 5.3.4 it absolutely cratered performance. On 5.2.4 it was fine.
It was doing lots of transform.getChild and gameObject.getComponent sorts of things.

Anyhow, the bug is now fixed so that doesnt happen on every OnDrawGizmos call and performance is back to a useable level.

No idea why the same code did not cause the same UI lockup/performance issues on 5.2.4

    Cheers!
    Ben

Maybe related, but using 5.3.4 we found the editor was using the Project Settings -> Time -> Fixed Timestep somehow when we were testing out particle systems in editor we changed ours from 0.1 to 0.01 and it seemed to fix the stuttery particle systems simulation

I found the OpenGlCore API (the new default) to be much slower than the old one (OpenGL 2). Perhaps try switching to the other graphics API in the player settings, see if that gives you your speed back.

Is there any update on this issue. I just installed 5.3.4p3 and while my game fps is fine the editor is super laggy. The weird thing is, the lag goes away if I select 'Maximize On Play'. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Same issue as raglet. Also if I move the console pane any where unity crashes. I am on a mac, when I had 4.3.x before, everything was really quick, but now its terribly buggy.

    Hi,

i encounter a similar issue on my Mac Book Pro Retina. Funnily enough if i test my game with "maximize on play" i do not get the framerate issue. This seems to affect the performance only when all other editor windows are visible.
