Posting to say I still get crashes 100% of the time entering play mode with VR support enabled (current patch release - 5.2.2p1) on a Mac (10.11). I'm set to Android builds for the Gear.

@leetful Do you have the Oculus runtime 0.5 installed on your machine? Are you entering play mode with NO Oculus device connected? (You said you are building Android GearVR so I presume yes, but want to confirm) Have you submitted a bug report? If so, what is the number?

Hmmm... I would assume they are doing development without an Oculus since, to the best of my knowledge, Oculus is not supported on Mac?

You can develop on the Mac using the 0.5 Oculus runtime. They have deprecated Mac support in the newer runtimes, but we still support the 0.5 runtime on OSX. I'm wondering if the issue leetful is seeing is that he doesn't have the runtime installed and it is somehow causing the crash.

Hi Ed, thanks for the reply.

I'm not developing to a desktop Oculus currently, just the Gear VR unit -- so no Oculus is connected while testing. It's possible I have the 0.5 runtime still installed from previous tests with the DK2 on these Macs though, if you think that might be part of the cause. I haven't submitted a bug report yet as I figured this may be a widespread existing bug still, but let me know if not.

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing the exact same crash here. Also running Mac 10.11 with Oculus runtime 0.5 installed (should it not be?) and building for Android with no device connected when entering playmode. I'm running Unity 5.2.2f1. Just filled a bug report (Case 744137).
    Thanks!

I'll look into the issue. You shouldn't need the runtime installed, but I was wondering if it might have been that it was needed to not crash since I haven't seen the crash yet myself. I'll do some testing later this afternoon. Thanks for the bug report.

Any chance? I've also came into another crash (now when building for the Samsung gear) I don't know if they are related. The new bug report is #744137 :) Happy to share more details!

Hi there @Ed unity We're also seeing this on 5.2.3. We're building our game with VR Mode enabled on a windows build machine which makes both versions. When the clients for Windows and Mac are made the Windows one works fine, but any Mac user crashes immediately after launch (with VR mode enabled in player) , even WITHOUT the SDK/Runtime installed on a Mac.

Here is the crash log from the mac:

    http://pastebin.com/AB3pydLh

Here is a vanilla Mac.app made using 5.2.3 in Unity (on a windows machine) that immediately crashes.

Would appreciate this being looked into, as currently due to our automated build process we cant ship with VR enabled, as the Mac clients would just crash.

    Cheers

I'm having similar weird bug/glitches when doing Build on Mac vs. Windows. Same exact project (in this case, trying to build for Cardboard)... if I do a Build on Mac, only a single camera view shows -- no stereo, no head/directional capabilities (even though they show up fine when I press Play to test in the Unity Editor); but when I build the same exact project on Windows, it works fine.

Jumping in to say this still seems to be the case, both in 5.2.3p1 and 5.3.0f2. Any new project made on the Mac crashes with VR support while entering play mode.

I also have this problem, And then update my computer display drive and everything is ok. I think your computer is not matched with the VR.

I'm also running into this. OSX 10.10.5, just installed Unity 5.3 and the sample VR project (both due to the email Unity sent out about better VR support).

I opened the sample VR project, opened a random scene, pressed "Play" and it crashed immediately.

I don't have an Oculus, or any Oculus software installed. I use (and was hoping to build for) the Samsung Gear VR platform.

It seems like you should be able to build for VR even if a VR headset isn't currently attached. That's kind of the point of Unity, right? I'm on a Mac, but I can build for Windows without installing Windows, and for Android without being on Android.

I was also getting this on OSX, 10.10.5 (mid 2015 MBPr full spec) with Unity 5.3.0f2
Blank project would crash as soon as VR Enabled was checked. After upgrading Oculus Runtime from 0.4 to 0.5 it's resolved... hope that hopes someone...

Same issue here, both when I press play and when I try to build my project. However, playing through the editor, building and running the build seem to work when my DK2 is attached to my computer.

Just installed Unity 5.3.2f1 on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and Unity still continues to crash when you run a project (Unity's own VR Samples in this case) with Virtual Reality Supported checked in the Player Settings.
Going to try and install the Oculus runtime and see if that helps.

OK. Unity stopped crashing after installing the Oculus runtime 0.5.0.1-beta. Now we'll just have to wait another 4 months for the HMD. :)
